A Solstice Story for Makers of Light

When the days grow short and the world turns silver, a single ember waits to be carried by the hearts of those who remember the magic of Light and Love.
There comes a moment each winter when even the light seems to forget itself.
Remember that hush after dusk on the night of Winter Solstice when everything stills ... in Slavic lore, this is the night when Dazhbog falls from the sky, his fire fading into the underworld. And it is his mother, Lada, the weaver of love-warmth, who keeps the ember alive, not with power, but with unconditional love of oneness. She wraps it in linen and gives it to a small, brave bird, who carries it through the winter's night until dawn returns.

When we cast the magic of our inner light flame tended by compassion and unconditional love, when we stitch, knit, sew, spin, or create in other ways with our hands through the cold winter months, we are like that brave bird from this Solstice Story. Each act of making and magical remembering is a warm, softly glowing ember carried out into the world. Each creation brought into the world by our loving hands sprinkles magical moments and resounds the promise whispered to the returning Sun: “The world awaits you.”
This is why I love remembering this Solstice Story each year when Yule season arrives. It reminds me that fiber art is not a mere pastime but a path of magic that connects us to our ancestors and the oldest form of devotion, creation, connection, healing, and creation.
The Inner Magic of This Season
Yule season isn’t only about the Sun’s rebirth, but also about our own. When the world seems cold, the nights long, and the soul longs for quiet, this is the time to nurture the inner sparks of light within our heart of hearts. When our hands feel into their works as fiber, flame, and fairy tales weave together, they feel into the very ways of how
Goodness endures. Beauty endures. Love in truth and trust endures. Life Renews.
And in that timeless endurance and renewal patiently creating and crafting, we discover the magical enchantments of the spell of life's joy itself.
