Have you ever thought of your knitting needles as wands? Or your crochet hook as a wand with a hook at the end? Creating with our hands is a form of magic, especially when each stitch carries a story. When we pick up yarn, we can choose to spin a new narrative, one that blends folklore with personal intention.
In Gaelic lore, the winter goddess Cailleach is seen as a shapeshifter and a crone who shapes mountains and rivers, rules the dark half of the year, and hands the land back to Brigid in spring. I like to imagine her spinning the first snowflakes, twisting fibers of cloud and moonlight. These images may seem fanciful, but they invite us to see our own work as part of a larger tapestry.

A Tiny String Charm: Story String
Supplies:
A length of wool or cotton yarn (about 18–24 inches).
A journal or piece of paper.
A pen.
How‑to:
Sit quietly with the yarn and write down three short memories or stories that you want to honor. They might be tales your grandmother told, moments of personal victory, or things you’re ready to release.
Pick up the yarn. Tie a knot near one end and whisper your first story. Tie a second knot a few inches away and whisper the second story. Tie the third knot and whisper the third story.
Now tie six more knots in between, filling the spaces with hopes, wishes, or blessings. You’ll end up with nine knots in total.
When finished, hang your story string in your favorite spot for journaling, reflection, or just pondering the marvels of life. Each time you see it, let yourself remember the stories, hopes, and wishes you imbued it with and feel their joy, inviting you to open up your heart and mind to many new marvelous life stories to come.
Blessings on all of your stories. May they bring and inspire joy and an abundance of health and wealth.
