The Quiet Work of Growing Deep Roots

There is a moment that happens in almost every gathering. It is difficult to predict when it will arrive ... it comes while a fairy tale is being told ... while hands are quietly creating ... while everyone is sharing insights ... the conversation gently pauses, someone looks up with a thoughtful smile, and says, "I've never thought about it that way before." Those are some of my favorite moments. Not because someone has learned a new fact, but because a new relationship has quietly begun.

Yesterday, as we explored the magic and medicine of Comfrey during my class at Pathways Stl, I felt that moment arrive as we spoke of an old plant that has walked beside generations of grandmothers, healers, wise women, and herbalists; a plant whose roots reach deeply into the earth and whose story has been lovingly carried through centuries of folk tradition. Yet, after everyone had gone home, along with the Comfrey blessings of its leaves, stems, flowers, and roots, they also carried a question,

Where in my own life am I being invited to grow deeper roots?

Over time, I have found that the most meaningful questions rarely ask for immediate answers. Instead, they become companions, walk beside us as we go about our days, quietly return while we water the garden, appear again during an evening walk, whisper while our hands are busy creating something beautiful ... and ... little by little, they begin healing something in our world. This is something plants do so deeply and gently at the same time. Every plant has practical gifts to share, and learning those traditions is part of honoring, befriending, and working with them, but beyond their practical uses, plants also have a remarkable way of inviting us into conversations that bring healing wisdom into our lives.

Comfrey loves becoming one of those companions for all who are open to getting to her. When I see her broad leaves stretching toward the summer light, I am reminded that the strongest growth is often hidden from view. Long before we admire the leaves and blossoms, the roots have already been patiently doing their work beneath the surface. In daily life, we often long for visible change, yet so much of what truly transforms us happens quietly in the unseen places where patience, trust, love, and perseverance are slowly taking root.
